- Four-year, main-campus institutions awarding bachelor's degrees or higher (2,406 schools).
- Membership and rank order are editorial judgments about résumé brand signal in elite professions and selective graduate admissions — not academic quality, student experience, or value.
- Ranks 1–20 follow a locked ‘auto-interview’ shelf from the source brief; 21–100 complete that tier sketch, inserting Yale, Dartmouth, and Cornell immediately after the locked twenty.
- Admission rate is shown only as context. Reordering by Scorecard figures would destroy the point of this list.
- Wharton and other professional schools are not separate undergraduate institutions; they are reflected in the parent university’s row.
- Signal is audience-dependent. A school that lights up a tech hiring manager may read differently on a regional public-interest résumé — and the reverse.
- Region tags are mutually exclusive editorial cuts: Northeast = New England; Mid-Atlantic = NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, and DC; Virginia campuses stay South (Charlottesville / Blacksburg / Williamsburg are not Northern Virginia).
