Chat-shaped search is having a moment. Most of it calls a language model and hopes the model does not invent a major, misremember a campus, or hallucinate an earnings number. Ask on this site refuses that bargain.
Ask parses your sentence against a committed vocabulary derived from the same artifacts the rest of the product uses: CIP programs, major families, lists, sortable metrics, control types, and states. Synonyms are hand-maintained and fail the build when they drift from the data. Ambiguous terms surface a choice instead of a silent guess.
What you get

- Zero room for a model to invent a college that is not in the dataset.
The tradeoff is honesty about coverage: if we cannot map a phrase, we say so. That is preferable to a fluent wrong answer.
