Elite roster density by sport
Which sports put more roster spots at highly selective schools, per high-school participant? Women and men are ranked separately. The count includes the Ivy League, Division III, and other schools that award no athletic aid. This is opportunity density inside a defined school set.
Published admit rate at or under 20% · 59 schools · EADA AY 2024-2025 · HS base: NFHS via NCAA Research (2024–25) and NFHS 2023–24 for niche sports · Scorecard profiles 2026-10-24
Read this first
The figure is elite-set roster spots divided by NFHS high-school participants, for one sport and one gender. A roster spot is not an offer of admission and not an offer of athletic aid.
Whether an athlete is recruited depends on coach support and level of play. This page is not recruiting advice and not admissions advice.
The short verdict
On a solid high-school base, the thinnest women's density in this set is currently Field Hockey (193 roster spots per 10,000 high-school participants). For men, Lacrosse (145 roster spots per 10,000 high-school participants). Treat those tops as model outputs. Track and cross country stay approximate, because many schools report them in one combined row.
The crowded end of the solid board is clearer: among women, Softball, Volleyball, and Bowling; among men, Wrestling, Basketball, and Volleyball. A large high-school pool overwhelms a small set of college rosters.
What we are measuring
Active set: Published admit rate at or under 20%. A school is in when its unitid is in both the EADA athletics file and the College Scorecard profiles, and its published admit rate (ADM_RATE) is at or under 20.0%. Division and athletic-aid dollars do not matter.
The cutoff is mechanical. This set includes Northeastern University (5.7%, NCAA Division I) and College of the Ozarks (14.9%, NAIA). They stay because the published admit rate clears the cutoff, not because of a prestige list.
EADA classifies Johns Hopkins University and Webb Institute as Other. Those schools stay because this set is not a division filter.
36 schools in this set report $0 of athletically related student aid. Ivy League members are in that group when the set includes them. A roster spot there is not an athletic scholarship. There is no undergraduate-size floor. A missing admit rate drops a school from the rate cutoffs. Rates are never estimated. See the list methodology.

Numerator: EADA participant headcounts at those schools, women and men separately. Coed counts fold into the matching gender. Every division counts, including Division III and Division I schools that report $0 athletic aid. The aid-seat ranking uses a different numerator and leaves those schools out.
Denominator: the same NFHS high-school participation figures as that aid-seat page. Mainstream sports use NCAA Research's 2024–25 figures. Niche sports use the NFHS 2023–24 survey. Club athletes who never appear on a high-school roster are absent here.
Primary score: roster spots per 10,000 high-school participants. Inside the solid-denominator sports for one gender, rows split into thinner, mid, and crowded thirds of this table. The bands describe this page only. Club-pipeline sports stay off the primary rank. Where no NFHS row exists, schools and spots are listed and the ratio stays blank.
Track and cross country share a combined EADA row at many schools. The split used here is the same approximate mix as the aid-seat page (about 68.5% track and 31.5% cross country). Treat those two bands as approximate.

Coverage
The numerator is the EADA artifact only (AY 2024-2025). Rosters are not typed in by hand.
These schools are in the College Scorecard profiles and are not in the EADA athletics file, so their teams are absent from the counts:
- Barnard College — on the Ivy League, Little Ivies, or Hidden Ivies list, admit rate 8.0%
- Harvey Mudd College — on the Ivy League, Little Ivies, or Hidden Ivies list, admit rate 13.1%
- United States Air Force Academy — service academy, admit rate 13.9%
- United States Military Academy — service academy, admit rate 14.0%
- United States Naval Academy — service academy, admit rate 9.4%
How to use this
If someone already loves two sports equally, density can be a tie-breaker. If they love one sport, a spreadsheet is a poor reason to switch. Club costs can exceed athletic aid even where a row looks thin. Many schools in this set award no athletic aid; need-based and merit aid are separate questions. Confirm the roster with the school.
- Aid-eligible roster scarcity — high-school participants versus seats at schools that can pay athletic aid. Ivy League and Division III are out of that numerator.
- Athletic scholarships by sport — programs, aid-eligible seats, and Division I roster ceilings.
- Division I roster limits — House settlement ceilings, not this density ranking.
- Elite path playbook — school-by-school planning. That page still carries no admit probabilities.
- Women’s flag football programs — a curated list, because flag football is not an EADA filter yet.
- Sports directory — every school that reports the sport, not only this set.
College participant counts from U.S. Department of Education — Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) (AY 2024-2025). High-school figures from the NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey as published by NCAA Research (2024–25) and the NFHS 2023–24 survey for sports that release omits. School set from College Scorecard admit rates in the profiles compiled 2026-10-24, or from the committed Ivy League, Little Ivies, and Hidden Ivies lists. This is roster-spot density — not recruiting advice, not admissions advice, and not a promise of athletic aid.
